Open-source software and source code
Last updated: 27 October 2026
Maniac OS is built on open-source software from Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (“noble”), Debian and other projects — among them the Linux kernel, firmware, Mesa, PipeWire and Flatpak. We are grateful to everyone who makes them.
Licences
Each of these components keeps its own licence — for example the GNU GPL, the GNU LGPL, the MIT or BSD licences. Those licences apply to those components, and nothing in our EULA limits the rights they give you.
On an installed system, the licence and copyright notice of each package is in /usr/share/doc/<package>/copyright.
Where to get the source code
The components taken from Ubuntu are the unchanged Ubuntu 24.04 LTS packages. Their exact source packages are available from Ubuntu:
- package search: packages.ubuntu.com/noble
- Launchpad: launchpad.net/ubuntu/noble
- the archive: archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool
The full list of source packages and their versions in each Maniac OS release is on the system, in /usr/share/doc/maniac-os/packages.txt.
FFmpeg
Maniac OS includes FFmpeg under the GNU LGPL for Maniac Cut and Maniac Movie. It is built from the unmodified upstream release; the configure line used for the build is in /usr/share/doc/maniac-ffmpeg/ on the system.
Written offer
For at least three years after we distribute a release of Maniac OS, anyone may ask us for a copy of the complete corresponding source code of the components in it that are licensed under the GNU GPL or LGPL. Write to support@maniaclab.app, naming the release. We will provide it for no more than our cost of shipping or hosting it.
